In
alchemical texts symbols often evolved from the desire to obscure
rather than illuminate. Alchemists created these symbols to
hide their formulas and methods from others, also intent on
creating gold from base metals. Later these symbols gained their
metaphysical meanings. Alchemy is an often used metaphor for
the act of painting and is the subject of the Alchemy Series.
